Info on the three ships Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria
Also this week my wife and I have been taking the chicks outside to play in the grass. We set up a cardboard cage in the grass so that the chicks couldn't escape. We let them explore the grass and have some fun. They really enjoyed pecking the grass and seeing all the small critters that were moving around. On a scary note, when we took the chicks inside we looked at our yard and a big hawk swooped down and landed where we had the chicks. Hawks can be predators of chickens so we were glad we got them inside safely. Here is a picture of them outside in the grass.
Here is an updated picture of the coop with some siding.
I am looking forward to all of your wonder questions!!
It looks like you are having a lot of fun with the chicks. We are glad they are all safe and okay from the scary (almost) encounter with the hawk! Whew!
ReplyDeleteEd is wondering how much money you spent on buying all of your animals and building their homes?
Collin is wondering how much wood it took to build the chicken coop?
Jackson is wondering how the chicks get in and out of their chicken coop?
Dominick is wondering how tall the chicken coop is?
Destiny is still wondering when the chicks sleep? Only at night? Or during the day, too?
Isaiah is wondering what sort of things you need to do in order to keep the chicks safe?
Ellie is wondering if the chicks still sleep in their cages or if they sleep in their home (the coop)?
Kye'Raell noticed and observed that the chicken have grown! She knows that soemtimes their fur can be either hard or soft. She is wondering how your chicken's fur feels?
Thank you so much for your response, Mr. Kelly, and we look forward to our questions being answered and learning more about you and your 'family'!

Ps. Ed wants to know if your dogs have tried to eat the chicks!?
Ed is wondering how much money you spent on buying all of your animals and building their homes?
ReplyDeleteWell Ed, I have been saving up for a long time so I could afford all the animals. When you buy animals you need to think about how you are going to provide food and shelter for them. With the chickens I knew I would have to spend money on a chicken coop and also on feed. With the horses, we bought the house because it had a barn so I didn't have to build that. Horse food can be expensive aswell. As far as how much... The chickens were 3.00 each and feed can be about $20-40 a month. The coop has been the bigger expense at over $3,000 so far.
When you buy a horse you are looking a wide range of prices. You get what you pay for. A more expensive horse typically has a lot more training. Which means a horse trainer has spent many hours working with that horse so it is safe to ride on. Our horses cost $3,500 each. They are well trained. Like I said I had to save up for a long time to make this possible.
Collin is wondering how much wood it took to build the chicken coop?
Wow, good questions. It took a lot!! Let me do the math... It has taken over 1,000 board feet. I can't give you an exact number.
Jackson is wondering how the chicks get in and out of their chicken coop?
I have built a sliding door on the side of the chicken coop so that the chickens can go into their grass area that will be fenced. I just finished the door this last weekend. I will have to post a picture of how it works! Good Question.
Dominick is wondering how tall the chicken coop is? It is 10 feet 3 inches tall from the ground. A basketball hoop is 10 feet tall so it is about the same height.
Destiny is still wondering when the chicks sleep? Only at night? Or during the day, too?
They sleep at night and during the day. Their heat lamp stayes on all day so they have no clue when it is night time. When they are outside in the coop they will sleep mainly at night but they do take naps during the day aswell.
Isaiah is wondering what sort of things you need to do in order to keep the chicks safe?
Well there are a lot of perdators in my area that I need to protect the chicks from. Want to guess what they are?
I need to put them inside the coop at night and close the door, I also need to build a fence around their outside grass area so some predators can't get them during the day. Most of their predators hunt at night so that is why I put them in at night. (hint)
Ellie is wondering if the chicks still sleep in their cages or if they sleep in their home (the coop)?
The chickens like to "roost" when the sleep. That means they will climb up on a pole and balance themselves on that pole as they sleep. Here is a good picture of a chicken roosting:

You can see the chickens are all on the wooden beams. They will nestle down and sleep there for the night.
Kye'Raell noticed and observed that the chicken have grown! She knows that soemtimes their fur can be either hard or soft. She is wondering how your chicken's fur feels?
Great question! Right away when we got them their fur was very soft because their feathers haven't grown in yet. Now their feathers have grown in and they are not as soft because feathers can be more stiff. I will have to post pictures of them from this week so you can see how much they have changed! Look for the pictures next week!
Ps. Ed wants to know if your dogs have tried to eat the chicks!?
Yes! My big dog, Moose, walked up to my wife as she was holding Nina and he just put his mouth around the chick! I don't know if he planned on eating Nina or just trying to play but it was a very scary moment (espically since Nina is Meg's favorite!) We have been tring to train Moose to respect the chickens and think of them as friends (not food), it is kind of like the sharks in finding Nemo... Fish are friends, not food... Chicks are friends not food...
Awesome Questions!!! Thank you guys so much! Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you for answering our questions! We have been learning so much about your chickens. We hope you have a spectacular ("dollar" word choice from Destiny and Angelo) weekend!!
