Horses

My wife Meg and I just purchased horses yesturday and we are really excited to add them to our family.

They are 7 and 8 years old.  We bought them from a horse ranch in Dodgeville Wisconsin.  The horses are both quarter horses and are called Paints because of their coloring.  They will be arriving to our house on Tuesday the 11th of October.  Their names are Jazz and KT.  We were thinking about changing KT's name, but are not sure to what.  We are both very excited to have them in our family.

Maybe I could answer a few questions you had about horses?

  2. Tayshon wonders if the horses are girls? Both of the horses are males

Cade wants to know if the horses can have babies? They can not

Abby wants to know if you will be scared to ride the horses? I will be a bit nervous but not scared. Horses can be unpredictable and it is good to be cautious.

Mariana wants to know how the horses will be delivered? The horses are going to be driven to my barn in a horse trailer. It will be pulled by a pickup truck. This is a very safe way for horses to travel.

Nick wants to know how fast the horses run? Well race horses can gallop faster than 40 miles per hour. My horses are not race horses and I would guess they could gallop/run about 25-30 miles per hour.

Nathan wants to know how tall the horses are? They are about 16-17 hands tall. Want to know what a "hand" is Click here: http://www.lovelongears.com/hands.html

Thea wants to know where the horses will stay? The horses will stay on my pasture and in my barn. I posted a few pictures of the barn if you want to take a look.

Jenna wants to know how much the horses weigh? The heaviest horse in the world, was a horse called samson, and he weighed (3360lbs) My horses weigh about 1500 pounds each I believe.

Jeremy wants to know what they sleep on and where do they go in winter because I know they can't sleep on the ground! They sleep in the pasture during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter they sleep in their horse stall, which is like a bedroom for horses. It is in my barn.

Abigail wants to know how they act? They are very nice. They need to get to know you before they are really comfortable, just like most people. These two horses are very affectionate and like to rub their heads on peoples arms.

Elijah wants to know if they eat hay? They do eat hay, but mostly they will eat grass from the pasture until the snow comes in. Then we will feed them hay.

Thank you guys so much for your questions!!

  3. Wow! Ms. Becker's class - You had some GREAT questions and we learned a lot from Mr. Kelly's replies!

We have just a few more questions to ask as well...

Destiny is wondering if the horses only sleep at night or if they also take naps during the day?

Ellie is wondering where they get their water from?

Matthew is wondering how much wood it took you to make the barn for the horses?

Allison is wondering how the horses know where their stalls are to sleep in at night?

Angelo is wondering if they have the same mom and dad?

  4. Wow!! Thank you for your amazing questions and name suggestions! Lets see if I can answer those questions for you.

Destiny is wondering if the horses only sleep at night or if they also take naps during the day? My horses sleep during the day and sometimes at night. I have a question for you: Do horses sleep standing up or laying down? Click the link for the answer! There is also an explination for why they sleep when they do.

Ellie is wondering where they get their water from?
We have a giant water trough that the horses get their water from. Click on the link and see if you can spy the trough in the background:

Matthew is wondering how much wood it took you to make the barn for the horses?
Well I am not sure how much wood it took. I did not build the barn it was part of the property when I bought it. I can imagine it took a lot of wood because it is pretty big. Good Question!

Allison is wondering how the horses know where their stalls are to sleep in at night?
We were very nervous that they didn't know where their stalls were, but we have shown them so they know now. Also, the horses don't like to sleep in the stalls, they sleep in the pasture. Why do you think that is?

Angelo is wondering if they have the same mom and dad?
I am not sure on this. If anything I think it would be the same father stallion. I will have to call and find out for you! Good question.

You guys are awesome! Those were some great names! My wifes favorite was "Hot Fudge Sundae"! We actually chose to call him Harley because it is short for harlequin. Want to know what harlequin means? Check out the definition and see which one fits!

  5. Thank you for spending your time answering our questions (Collin), we learned SOOO much!

We specifically liked learning that horses sleep standing up and they don't like to sleep in their stalls!

We also enjoyed that you gave up some questions to think about and gave us links to find out more information about your horses (Ed and Ms. C). We can't wait to continue learning more!

    PS. Dominick says, "hi!"
